For all the Jeffrey Archer fans, his new book is here and this new one is a collection of short stories. ‘And Thereby hangs a Tale’ is his sixth book concerning collection of short stories. This book has 15 short stories, 10 of which are based on true incidents and the remaining ones cropped up from the writer’s imagination. This book is an excellent summer time read.
Jeffrey Archer has collected these stories from around the world during his travels in past few years. It has stories from his native United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France and the last story in this collection is concerning India. Yes, it has a story based on true incident that happened in India. Some of these stories depict unknown facts and incidences about famous personalities/places while some stories are about extraordinary incidents experienced by ordinary individuals.
Out of this collection, the stories titled ‘The Queen’s Birthday Telegram’ (An old man waiting for a Queen’s letter of Appreciation to his Wife on her 100th Birthday) , ‘Members Only’ (A young man Desperately trying to get membership in a prestigious Golf Club), ‘High Heels‘ (A loss Adjuster working on his first Case), ‘The Undiplomatic Diplomat' (A nobleman desperately trying to uphold his family name) are really interesting reads and are based on real life incidents. Few of the imaginary stories are also good.
‘Caste-Off’ is a story about an Indian couple. In his own words Jeffrey Archer states “The collection is about my experience during the past six years, out of which the story of an Indian couple is the most fascinating and touched me the most.” As the name suggests, the story is about inter-caste marriage and what happens to them.
Some of these stories will make you laugh and some of them may bring tears. Though, few of these stories are out rightly predictable which you may find a bit boring. This book does not reach the standards of author’s previous short story collections viz. ‘Twelve Red Herrings’ or ‘A Twist in the Tale’ but it’s the spellbinding style of writing that keeps you rooted to this book.
Overall, out of this collection, few of the stories are an excellent read while others are not that interesting. But Jeffrey Archer is an excellent story-teller and just his style of writing can make a boring story an interesting read. If you are traveling and need something interesting to pass your time or if you are stuck at home due to the intense heat outside or put simply, if you are a Jeffrey Archer Fan then you must read this book!
