Enter RJ Soni, who greets us with a vivacious ‘Hi!!!’ . After exchanges of pleasantries, we started shooting questions at this lively young lady who seemed thrilled by the whole exercise.
Q: Tell us something about yourself.
A: I am a shy girl (laughs) (This is hard to believe since she is a RJ!) who likes listening to people. During my college days I was a quiet girl who enjoyed spending time with few good friends. So, me becoming an RJ came as a big surprise for my friends from college. (Laughs a hearty Laugh which we guess is her trademark style.) I am an out and out Nagpurite. I have earned my Bachelors Degree from L.A.D College from the city and then done my MBA in Media Management from Pune. I have also done a Diploma Course in International Trade.
Q: Tell us about your journey towards becoming a RJ.
A: I was selected from a RJ Hunt Contest held in Pune. I was awarded the Listeners Choice Award . At that time, Radio Mirchi was planning to start their operations from Nagpur. They asked me if I would be interested in joining the Nagpur office and I happily obliged.
Q: What are the shows that you host?
A: I host two daily shows. From 11am till 2pm – “90’s Not Out” and from 2pm till 5pm in the evening – “Kya Zamana Tha”.
Q: As an RJ, you are always required to be happy & cheerful? How do you manage to be enthusiastic all day long?
A: (Smiles) The biggest energizer is the Radio itself! There is something magical about the mic in the studio. Just being in the studio cheers me up. Secondly, I genuinely like listening to people. Talking and listening to people ups my energy count. I try to be honest which helps me to connect to the listeners and to make one-on-one interaction with them. I speak my heart out and the listeners reciprocate.
Q: How has being an RJ changed you as a person?
A: I have shed some of my shyness (laughs) and I am a bold and confident individual now. ‘Value Added Confidence’ to be specific. I have become a very emotional person and I have learned the importance of time management. In my profession you just can’t afford to be late in office because your show must and must start ON-TIME.
Q: Can you share some of your memorable moments On-Air on Radio?
A: (Laughs) Well, we run some on-air contests where people have to answer questions in order to win a Prize. We have to note down their Phone Numbers in order to inform them in case they win the contest. During one such contest when I asked a guy his phone number , he got very emotional and replied, “Pehli Baar Kisi Ladki ne mera phone number maanga hai !” .That was the funniest moment ever. I should also mention here that on more than one occasions, Guys have asked me to MARRY them, live on-air!
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: Now a days I don’t get much time to spend on hobbies but I love to Sing and being an RJ is a hobby in itself for me.
Q: your Favourite Movies?
A: I like romantic movies.(Ahem..Ahem). I can watch any romantic movie and my favorite movies include DDLJ and Jab We Met.
Q: And your favorite Delicacies...
A: I like Kheema. I love Biryani and any dish having Chicken in its ingredients. (Laughs)
Q: What is that one thing that you love most about Nagpur.
A: I love this city. My entire education has been done in this city. The life here is very peaceful and the people here are very friendly and helpful. I am simply in love with Nagpur.
Q: One thing that you hate about Nagpur.
A: The roads in the city are in pretty bad shape. Otherwise there is nothing to complain about.(A genuine Smile)
Q: Any tips for aspiring Radio Jockeys.
A: Don’t be artificial; just be yourself because this really helps in connecting with the listeners. You should be spontaneous and should have presence of mind. You should be able to handle people well without hurting them. And you should have PASSION! The other skills required can be learnt on the job.
Q: Your message to Nagpurians.
A: Nagpurians have the power to love and accept people for who they are and I want them to stay that way!
