Types of Snakes found in Nagpur

Nagpur City gets its name from the River Nag which coils its way through the city resembling the shape of a snake. Nagpur irrefutably also means City of Snakes. Here’s a brief overview of different types of snakes found in Nagpur Region.

Poisonous Snakes

Indian Cobra (Nag)

  • Spectacled Cobra
  • Molded Cobra
  • Common Cobra

It can grow up to 8 feet in length.

  • There are two black marks on the inside of the hood from which it gets its name.
  • It’s found in rice fields, jungles, grasslands and even old houses.
  • Its Neurotoxic venom is extremely poisonous and lethal and attacks the nervous system.
  • Antivenom is available in Major City Hospitals.
Russell’s Viper (Ghonas)

  • Saw Scaled Viper (It has Distinctive Saw Shaped Scales on its head)

It can grow up to 6 feet in length.

  • It has Flat, Triangular shaped head with small scales on top.
  • This snake has the biggest Venom teethes found amongst Indian Snakes.
  • The Venom Teethes can be up 2 ½ inches long.
  • Its Hemotoxic Venom affects Blood vessels and Kidneys and is extremely lethal to humans.
  • Antivenom is available in Major City Hospitals.
Common Indian Krait (Manyar)
indian-krait-manyar-nagpur This snake has smooth, glossy Scales and the uppermost rows are hexagonal and distinctly enlarged. It is found in Rice fields, Jungles and residential places.

It can grow up to 8 feet in length.

  • This Poisonous snake has the world’s smallest Venom Teethes.
  • Its Neurotoxic Venom can cause pain in joints and can also cause Paralysis. 
  • Antivenom is available in Major City Hospitals.


Non-poisonous Snakes

Indian Rat Snake (Dhaman)

  • This is the most common non-poisonous snake found in Nagpur Region.
  • Its staple food is field rats, hence the name.
  • It can grow up to 12 feet in length.
  • These snakes are good climbers and excellent swimmers.
  • It inflates its neck and hisses when disturbed.
  • They can be Yellowish Brown, Moss green or entirely black in color.
Bronzeback Tree Snake

  • This snake is found in dense forests as well as dry scrub forests.
  • It can grow up to 5 feet in length.
  • It has thin elongated body with flat elongated head.
  • This snake is one of the fastest Indian Snakes.
  • It inflates it fore body when disturbed.
Indian Rock Python

  • This snake can grow up to a whopping 25 feet in length.
  • It’s found in Forests and also in open areas and agricultural fields.
  • This snake has a stout body with smooth shiny Scales
  • Labial Pits on Lip Scales are thermo –receptors and help snake locate warm blooded pray.
